It's Chuck's birthday party, and he tries to escape it with Morgan. Because of this, Ellie scolds him and forces him to face the guests downstairs. He explains to some girls that (in chronological order): he works at the Nerd Herd, he actually has a plan for his future, he plays Call of Duty, he went to Stanford University and took up Engineering, and that he had an athletic roommate named Bryce. He also said he thinks Bryce is an accountant. He also notes that he used to have a girlfriend named Jill back in freshman year, and this turns off the girls big time as they eventually leave him at his spot, talking to no one in particular.
Chuck was telling the truth from what he knows, but Bryce isn't actually an accountant. Somewhere else, he's a bloodied guy in a suit transferring some files from an "Intersect Computer" to an external device; activating this computer also causes panels from the entire room to light up with changing pictures of random things. After the transfer, he detonates an explosive, destroying the entire room and giving him an escape route. Outside the compound, he is shot by a man called Casey, but not before he could send an email to his old roommate, Chuck.
Ellie talks to her brother about the story with Jill being "five years ago," implying that Chuck has to move on with his life. He returns to his room with Morgan where he discovers Bryce's email with a riddle for a password based on Zork, an old text-based videogame. He sends Morgan home, answers the riddle, and is immediately exposed to a rapid slideshow of thousands of images, tiring him until he collapses by around 7.00AM, hours after he opened the email. Morgan retrieves him from his room and they make their way to Buy More where they both work.
Chuck orients the Nerd Herd team about a new virus that infects computers visiting Irene Demova's (a Serbian pornstar) website. During the discussion, he is distracted by a news report on TV about General Stanfield's arrival in Los Angeles, on which he "flashes" for the first time.
CIA Director Langston Graham, NSA Director Brigadier General Diane Beckman, and Casey are then shown discussing Bryce Larkin (who is supposedly working for the CIA), the function of the "Intersect Computer" (to house joint CIA-NSA information embedded in thousands of images), and the necessary steps in retrieving the government's secrets. Casey reveals that he was able to trace Bryce's email to Los Angeles, and that he's following the tracks there.

Meanwhile, at the Buy More, a woman named Sarah appears to ask for Nerd Herd assistance in fixing her broken cellphone. Chuck fixes it in a jiffy. Almost right away, another customer comes in and asks Chuck why his video camera wasn't able to record his daughter's recital; Chuck tells him that he didn't load his camera with tape. Sarah watches Chuck's team recreate the girl's recital at the Buy More for the father to tape. Right after, Harry Tang does an asshole spiel at Chuck and tells him that their boss, Big Mike, wants Harry to be the assistant manager, to the surprise of Chuck who didn't even know that there was such an open position. By the time they end their conversation, Sarah was gone but left her number on Chuck's table.
Chuck and Morgan return home just in time to witness a black-suited thief carrying Chuck's computer. The thief subdues the two witnesses but breaks the computer in the process. While on the run from Chuck's house, the thief is revealed to be Sarah.
Back at the Buy More, Lester examines the computer and tells Chuck that it's broken beyond repair. Chuck then visits Large Mart to get new locks for his apartment. Inside, he encounters a man that triggers his second "flash," someone he perceives to be very dangerous.
Meanwhile, Sarah is monitoring Chuck from a distance and reports to Langston that the computer she tried to steal was broken beyond repair. The director promptly tells her that the mission is over and asks her to return, but she insists that there must be something she can do and asks for twelve more hours to do it.
Sarah returns to the Buy More and asks Chuck to go out with her on a date. He agrees. Later that night and prior to their date, Langston commands Sarah to kill Chuck if he runs.
Over dinner, Sarah and Chuck make small talk about their exes: Sarah's "Bruce" and Chuck's Jill. They then take a walk outside where Chuck "flashes" for the third time, this time upon seeing a government convoy. Casey is also shown spying on the two (who are about to enter a bar) from inside a van, saying their mission is to capture Chuck alive.
Seeing the NSA agents entering the bar, Sarah pulls Chuck to the dancefloor; Chuck thinks they are just dancing, but Sarah stealthily stalls the advances of the agents by throwing several projectile weapons at them (while dancing with Chuck). She then makes a break for it with Chuck: she picks the lock of Chuck's car, gives Casey's van a chase by driving fast in reverse gear, and turns (still in reverse) to a downward stairs. The resulting fall from the stairs and several bumps from Casey's van leave Chuck's car wrecked.
Sarah tells Chuck about the NSA agents: that they'll hurt him and they're after him. Suddenly, the NSA van appears and hits the side of the car. Rattled, they leave the car, but with the van still coming at them, Sarah throws a knife at the emergency blockade button and overpowers the incoming vehicle at the last minute.
They then make their way to the rooftop of a building. Sarah reveals that she worked with Bryce at the CIA, and Chuck tells her that he recently received an email from Bryce and saw lots of pictures from the message. Casey appears from behind Chuck, telling them that the NSA wants Chuck; Sarah replies that the CIA "gets him first." With Sarah's gun pointed at Chuck at Casey's gun trained on Sarah, Chuck interrupts the two agents' discussion and tells them that General Stanfield will be killed tonight. He reveals that "something is very wrong" with him and that he is remembering things he should not, citing as an example his recognition of the man earlier at Large Mart as a Serbian demolitions expert.
He tells Casey that the NSA intercepted blueprints of a hotel last week, and turns to Sarah and tells her that the CIA found the schematics of a bomb in Prague. He further says that the bomb is in the hotel. Understanding the situation, Sarah tells Chuck about the Intersect for the first time: that the pictures he saw were embedded with government secrets. With much hesitation, Chuck agrees to help Sarah and Casey defuse the bomb at the hotel.
At the hotel, Chuck identifies where the bomb is and with less than a minute to go before the bomb detonates, he decides to visit Irene Demova's website and infect the laptop wired to the bomb with the virus they talked about earlier at the Buy More. Within seconds, the laptop is fried and the bomb is defused.
Chuck, Sarah, and Casey gather outside the hotel to discuss what's going to happen next. Chuck tells the agents that whatever happens, he wants his family and friends left out. A few hours later at a beach, Chuck ponders about his life and the changes that will happen soon; Sarah joins him and tells him to tell his family and friends nothing to keep them safe. She also asks him to trust her.
Back at the Buy More, now knowing about the open assistant manager position, Chuck files his application at Big Mike's office. Chuck is then told to train a new employee, who is to his surprise none other than Casey. Sarah is then shown shopping at the store; Chuck "flashes" on the ring she is wearing and he sees a surveillance footage of her killing two men.
